Chapter 17: Dante
She didnât know I was there, lingering out of sight while Marco stood at her car door. When Kira left this morning, Iâd already been awake, on edge for most of the night over what Angelo had said. Marco knew what had happened when my parents died, something only Angelo could have revealed, no doubt, when heâd had a few drinks in him. He knew about the bribe.
This man, whoâd only recently come into our lives, had managed to get under the hood and pull apart our fragile engine, piece by piece, waiting until we were nothing but a hollowed-out shell.
Iâd checked Kiraâs location on my phone. Minutes later, I was up and out the door, heading her way, fearing she would search for answers about Marco alone. Turned out, I was right.
What I hadnât expected was to see him there. Marco mustâve known where we lived and had been watching us â watching her. What the hell were we up against? Iâd been standing across the street under the awning of a liquor store, next to the outdoor ice freezer. The parking lot of Sunset 717 within my line of sight.
Iâd watched her get into her car and then Marco turned up, appearing out of nowhere. It took everything in my power not to bum-rush the guy to get him away from her, but I didnât move. I wasnât sure what would happen. Would he get into her car? Would she get out?
Instead, Kira drove away, and I breathed a sigh of relief. Now, I watched Marco as he made his way to that restaurant where Kira had just come from. He entered the building, and something inside me stirred. I had a feeling that whatever was going on behind those brown papered windows involved my wife.
I had to make a move, and it had to be now. I stepped off the sidewalk, heading across the street toward the restaurantâs entrance. With the windows covered, I easily approached without being seen. The door was closed, but a small sliver of glass was exposed between the two wrapped front windows. I shielded my eyes and peered in, but only for a moment. I didnât see anyone, but I heard voices. Indiscernible, but definitely coming from two people. The muffled voices continued to rise. One of them, I now recognized was Marcoâs.
âWhat did you tell her?â His deep cadence sounded through the glass. âYou fucking owe me. I cleared the way for you to get this place, and this is how you repay me?â
âCleared the way? You left me high and dry, or have you forgotten about that? I had to pull myself out of the hole you dug,â the other man replied. âI canât believe youâd risk coming back here. I donât know what you think youâre doing.â
Coming back? I wondered. When had heâd been here before? From where I stood, Marco was tangled up in something bigger than Kira and me. Unless we were part of his plan.
